How Health Foods Relate to a Healthy Diet
Health food is a nebulous term that can mean different things to different people. While there is no standard definition, most people would agree that foods that are high in vitamins and minerals and low in salt, sugar, and fat (that is, foods that are good for you) are health foods. Healthy foods play an important role in overall health and well-being and are integral to a healthy diet. But that isn't all that a healthy diet is, gluten free foods can promote the best health in many people.
When you think of a healthy diet, you probably think of one in which you eat good foods instead of the foods you like. This isn't the only way to go, though, especially in the case of vegetables and fruit. Instead of replacing, start with adding. For example, add an extra serving of vegetables at lunch or dinner, or snack on fruit throughout the day. Sure, it isn't as good, but it's still better than not doing it at all. You may find that these additions turn into substitutions all by themselves over time. When you fill up on good food, you'll be less likely to reach for those unhealthy snacks throughout the day.
It's also important to remember that you don't have to stop eating the things you love entirely. The secret is to eat less of them less often. So, instead of treating yourself every day, have them once a week or, instead of a whole bowl, have half a bowl. This can actually result in better diet outcomes. When people feel deprived, they tend to give up on diets. Allowing yourself to enjoy your favorites, on occasion, will help you stick to your diet and improve your health over the long term.
Where you do want to replace, not add, are grains. Whole grains, of all types, are better for you than processed ones. They have more fiber and are linked to healthier hearts and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Make sandwiches with whole grain wheat bread instead of white. Switch to whole grain pasta as well. Also, use brown rice instead of white. You can find brown rice in restaurants now, though you normally have to request it. This is, admittedly, a change that requires a little getting used to, but once you do, you'll find that these whole grain options taste just as good as their refined cousins and have a heartier texture.
Keep in mind that a healthy diet is only half the equation when it comes to a healthy life. Exercise is a huge part of staying healthy and maintaining your weight.
